Programs That Work for Youth

Community giving is such a rewarding experience.  Each year our staff selects a community service project that aligns with our mission "Stewards of People & Earth". This year four year veteran Michelle Curran and newcomer Nash Crawley  worked with Director Dela Esquela of the Parkway-Sommerville Neighborhood Center.  Ms. Dela requested some assistance with professional attire for the staff.  They wanted something to wear out in the community and for family activity night.  Michelle & Nash selected a summer polo and a fleece vest to give the staff a professional look all throughout the year.  Shirts and vests were embroidered with the community center logo so the staff would be visible in a crowd of excited children.

The Guadalupe-Parkway Sommerville Neighborhood Centers were founded by Barbara Sommerville & the Lubbock Area United Way shortly after the 1970 tornado struck downtown Lubbock. The Neighborhood Center strives to keep young people engaged in positive activities.  Lorene Cole, Michelle Curran and Polly Vann spent time with the kids making crafts during Christmas break.  It was great to see the kids in action.  Craft activities included dance, making bouncy balls, and an art project with snowflakes and Christmas trees.

The staff works hands-on with the kids to build teamwork, address the needs of family living, and provide opportunities for children to develop self-presentation, character, confidence, leadership and discipline. The Neighborhood Center has served thousands of children & their families.
